Imagine Your Flight Instructor Suddenly Jumped Out of the Plane

It sounds like the plot of a movie, but it actually happened.

Last Saturday, a 22-year-old student pilot in Argentina was taking what should have been a routine training flight in a small Cessna 150. Her instructor, 42-year-old Leandro Andrés Bertazzo, had already taught another student earlier that day. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary.

Then, according to local media, he took off his headset, opened the aircraft door and said something his student will probably never forget:

“You know what you have to do. Carry on.”

A moment later, he jumped from the plane.

Think about that for a second.

You’re still hundreds of feet in the air. The only person who knows more than you is gone. There isn’t time to panic because the airplane still needs to be flown.

That’s exactly the situation the student—identified only as Rosario by local media—found herself in.

Instead of freezing, she focused on what she’d been trained to do. Despite being in what the director of her flight school later described as “complete shock,” she managed to land the aircraft safely.

Authorities later found Bertazzo’s body near the town of Toledo in central Argentina.

What’s perhaps even more unsettling is that people who knew him reportedly saw no warning signs. The director of the flight school said Bertazzo had conducted the earlier lesson that day and had shown no indication that anything was wrong.

Investigators are now trying to determine exactly what happened and what led up to the incident. The aircraft has been taken into custody as part of the investigation.

Stories like this remind us of two very different things.

First, training matters. In one of the most stressful situations imaginable, a student pilot relied on her training and safely landed the airplane.

Second, we often have no idea what someone else may be struggling with. The people around Bertazzo reportedly did not expect what happened that day, a sobering reminder that mental health challenges are not always visible.

It’s an extraordinary story—not because of how it ended for the instructor, but because a student pilot was suddenly forced to become the only pilot on board and, against all odds, brought the aircraft safely back to the ground.
